Chandrika Tandon The Grammy Award for “Triveni” – Indian-American entrepreneur and Grammy-winning singer Chandrika Tandon is well-known for her album Triveni, which took home the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album trophy at the 67th Grammy Awards. Chandrika Tandon is an Indian-American musician, philanthropist, and businesswoman who was born in Chennai. She started her professional career with McKinsey & Company, where she was the first Indian-American woman partner. She went on to establish Tandon Capital Associates. Beyond his commercial endeavors, Tandon is an active philanthropist who supports the arts and education. She has held trusteeships at NYU Langone Health and New York University. The engineering school at NYU, now known as the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, received a $100 million donation from her foundation. Tandon is a successful musician in addition to her business and charitable endeavors. She has put out a number of albums that combine various genres with Indian classical music.


 

Born in 1954 in Chennai, India, Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon came from a traditional Tamil Brahmin household. Her sister Indra Nooyi, who went on to become the CEO of PepsiCo, is one of her three siblings; she is the oldest. Because her mother was a musician and because the Samaveda teachings were ingrained in their home, music was a big part of her upbringing. In order to convince her mother to let her attend Madras Christian College, where she eventually achieved academic success, Tandon reportedly went on a hunger strike during her early schooling.

Learning. Before receiving a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, where she was one of just eight female students in her class, Tandon attended Madras Christian College for her further education.

 

Career in the workplace:
During the Lebanese Civil War, Chandrika Tandon started working at Citibank in Beirut. She became the first Indian-American woman to be elected a partner at McKinsey & Company in 1979 after joining the business in New York City. She created Tandon Capital Associates in 1992 after working at McKinsey, where she advised significant financial institutions around the world.

 

Career in Music:
Tandon’s career and her musical journey are intertwined. She has received training as a singer and composer in Western, Carnatic, and Hindustani music traditions. Soul Call, her 2009 debut studio album, was nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for Best Contemporary World Music Album. At the 67th Grammy Awards, she took home the Grammy for Best New Age, Ambient or Chant Album for her most recent album, Triveni, which was published in 2024.
