Will Chennai Schools Reopen on December 5? TN Holiday Update

School Holiday in Tamil Nadu: After almost a week of overcast skies and flooding, Chennai had a pause in the unrelenting rain today when the sun came out. While an upper-air cyclonic circulation continues over the southeast Arabian Sea and nearby Lakshadweep, keeping the area under observation, the weather agencies report that the low-pressure system that pummeled the coast has deteriorated into a less noticeable low-pressure area.

Thirteen districts, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villuppuram, Nilgiris, the ghat parts of Coimbatore, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi, as well as Puducherry, have been placed under yellow alert by the Regional Meteorological Center for Thursday. Officials warn that localized heavy rain is still likely in the southern coastal zone even if the worst of the system has passed.

Manali New Town (Zone 02 W18) recorded 24 cm of rain on Wednesday, followed by Ennore (21 cm), Wimco Nagar (20 cm), and Kathivakkam (16 cm). Many suburban stations reported between 7 and 15 cm of rain in a single day. The significant waterlogging and road damage that have been recorded throughout Chennai and the surrounding areas can be explained by these concentrated downpours.

Are schools & Colleges Holiday on December 5 in Tamil Nadu?

In the most severely impacted areas of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, local district administrations of the rain-stricken districts announced school closures on December 3 and 4. No official school holiday has been declared for December 5 as of yet; district officials are expected to assess road conditions and make any decisions by today evening.

The prognosis indicates that schools will probably reopen on Friday. District officials may still announce a holiday, though, because roads are still damaged and waterlogging makes it difficult for students who travel great distances. While many universities are still open, each institution may have its own schedule, so parents should keep an eye on official district bulletins and school communications.
