Many places in South India are experiencing heavy rain again. Because of this sudden change in weather, officials have announced a holiday today, Saturday, for schools and colleges in several regions. The decision was taken to keep students safe, as continuous rainfall has caused flood-like situations in some districts.

Tamil Nadu is facing very strong rain because of the impact of the new cyclone named Ditwah. Even though the earlier storm Senvar passed, the new system formed in the Southwest Bay of Bengal has brought intense rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued a red alert for six districts — Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Kallakurichi. These places are likely to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall today. Due to this, the government declared a holiday for all educational institutions in these districts.

Many villages in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur are cut off because roads are flooded. In Thoothukudi too, several areas are surrounded by water, making travel difficult. The governments of Puducherry and Karaikal have also announced holidays for schools and colleges as a safety measure.

According to IMD, the weather system near Sri Lanka has strengthened into a deep depression and is moving closer to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Yemen suggested the name “Ditwah” for this cyclone. Officials warn that more rain may fall for the next few days, especially in coastal regions.

There is also a chance that Andhra Pradesh may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall due to this cyclone’s influence. If the rain becomes more intense, the AP education department may also announce sudden holidays in affected districts. A final decision may be taken depending on how the weather changes, especially since the cyclone is expected to be stronger on Monday.
