Shankar’s Velpari Movie: South Indian film has mostly benefited from Shankar, the showman director who has created a name for himself with great elegance, for almost three decades now. Since his final hit in 2018, the director has been touring in quest of more fame. But Shankar’s following return is a major one; a project he calls Velpari, the most inspirational of his life.
Velpari draws its name from Su Venkatesan’s renowned historical novel Veera Yuga Nayagan Velpari wrote. This movie, deeply ingrained in Sangam Tamil history, chronicles Pari, a courageous monarch of Mullai Nadu, who had fought great conflicts against the Chera, Chola, and Pandya kingdoms.
Shankar plans to take advantage of the culturally rich narrative and design the whole show to satisfy international cinematic expectations. According to reports, the screenplay is complete while the director imagines a three-part epic with Pari as the main character.
Shankar remarked at a recent gathering that Enthiran was once his ideal work. He admitted, “Not anymore,” Velpari most inspires me today. I want it to be a world-class production, something along the scope of Game of Thrones or even Avatar.
Present on the event, Superstar Rajinikanth wished Shankar and expressed his delight over his ambitious fresh journey.
Shankar is expected to start production on Velpari from June 2026 as Indian 3 approaches finishing. Meanwhile, preproduction is rushing ahead thanks to cast announcements yet unresolved. With stories on a major Bollywood generational star—most likely either Shah Rukh Khan or Ranveer Singh—joining the action, Suriya and Vikram are much discussed among Tamil media for the lead roles.
Keeping in line with S.S. Rajamouli’s newest epic, Varanasi, the film’s estimated crazy budget of ₹1000 crore will include Dharma Productions and Netflix in its big production alliance.
Velpari will be Shankar’s attempt to restore his lost position in the higher echelons of Indian cinema following two or three latest failures. The project is already one of the most anticipated movies of the decade, with a historical narrative, large budget, and worldwide aim.
