App Mandatory on All Smartphones:

Cybercrime is increasing every day in India. Even though police and government departments are creating awareness, many people are still becoming victims of online fraud. Thousands of citizens lose money every month because cybercriminals use new tricks to cheat them. In big cities, these cases are even higher. Police are able to trace and return money in some cases, but in many other cases, the criminals remain untraceable.

App Mandatory on All Smartphones:

To control this situation, the Central Government has now taken a strong decision. The Telecom Ministry has ordered smartphone makers and telecom operators to install the government’s Sanchar Saathi app on all new phones. This app will be a default app, and users cannot delete it. Companies have been given 90 days to complete this process. Even phones that are already manufactured and waiting to be released must include this app before sale.

However, Apple usually does not allow third-party apps to be pre-installed on its devices. So, there is a chance that the company may oppose this decision. How the government will respond to Apple’s stand is now a topic of discussion.

The Sanchar Saathi app was launched in January to stop cyber fraud and phone theft. The app is designed to help users in several ways. If someone’s phone gets stolen, they can file a complaint through the app. Using the phone’s IMEI number, authorities can block the stolen device to prevent misuse. The app also allows users to check how many SIM cards are registered with their name.

The Centre revealed that, through this app, it has already identified around 7 lakh stolen phones across the country. It also found several cases of IMEI tampering, which is a major reason stolen phones are difficult to track.

With the app becoming mandatory, the government hopes to reduce cybercrime and phone theft incidents significantly.
