Customer Cheats Instamart, Gets Refund Using AI Photos Of Damaged Goods

Customer Cheats Instamart, Gets Refund Using AI Photos Of Damaged Goods

People now use AI tools to fake product damage photos and claim refunds. A recent egg order case shows how such fraud causes real losses for companies.

A worrying new trend is hitting online companies. People are using AI to fake product damage. They create convincing edited images for refunds. This causes real financial losses for businesses.

The Fake Egg Incident

A customer ordered eggs from Swiggy Instamart. Only one egg was actually broken. The customer used Gemini Nano AI. They edited the photo of the egg tray. The AI added cracks to almost all eggs. It made the whole tray look ruined.

How the Refund Was Processed:

The customer submitted a photograph to support after the incident occurred. The Instamart system relies solely on photographic evidence as verification of claims. At this time, the system does not have the technology to detect photos however they may be altered through the use of artificial intelligence. As a result of the investigation, the agent wanted to resolve this matter quickly and the agent issued a full refund due to their efforts.

Therefore, the company incurred the cost of the order.

Why This is a Major Issue:

AI technology is capable of manipulating images to create incredibly realistic examples of damage. However, businesses have no way of identifying manipulated images due to the absence of advanced recognition features. Consequently, each time a small refund is processed, it eventually adds up to a significant loss of revenue for all businesses due to an increase in refund fraud as a result of widespread misuse of the technology. This incident serves as a valid example of an ongoing threat.

AI as a Resource, Not the Enemy:

AI is a valuable and efficient tool that has been developed to help people complete tasks; however, when AI is used in an unethical manner, it can have a detrimental effect on the ability of quick commerce to succeed. The same issue will also adversely impact other ecommerce businesses. Therefore, both quick-commerce and ecommerce companies need to develop and implement new verification systems.

Social Media Reaction to the Fraud:

This event gained a lot of attention on social media platforms, and many users commented on how horrible the customer was for committing this act. People feel this is an immoral and damaging act to think about, as an honest business could also suffer as a result of this incident. Discussions about this incident also generated a debate regarding ethical behavior.
