Google created a strict new metric. It tracks “excessive partial wake locks.” Google’s system flags an app if it holds wake locks for over two cumulative hours within a twenty-four hour period. Some system tasks are exempt from this rule.
Google judges the app on its last twenty-eight days of use. The system flags it if five percent of user sessions cross the limit.
Apps that cross the line face two consequences. Their visibility on the Play Store will be diminished. They will be removed from key recommendation areas. They will have a bright red warning label on the listing.
The label will state “high background activity” and warn the app may consume your battery. Users can make informed choices.
