New SIM Rule for Social Media Apps:
The Central Department of Telecommunications has announced a major new rule for people who use messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, Signal, ShareChat, Arattai, Josh, and others. From now on, you can use these apps only if your phone has an active SIM card in it. This rule has been introduced to stop the growing number of cybercrimes happening across the country.
Until now, users could install a social media app in one phone and verify it using the OTP received on another phone with a SIM card. This made it easy for cybercriminals to access these apps without revealing their real identity. They used this loophole to cheat people from unknown locations.
The government noticed that criminals were taking advantage of this and decided to make the rules stricter. To control cyber fraud, the Department of Telecommunications has issued the Telecommunication Cyber Security Amendment Rules, 2025. These rules say that every user must have a SIM card in the same phone where the social media app is being used. Telecom companies have also received orders to follow this rule strictly.
Messaging apps will now have to follow a process called SIM binding, which means the account will work only on the device where the SIM card is present. If you remove the SIM card, the app will not allow you to access your messages.
Banks and UPI apps already use this method to prevent fraud. Now social media apps must do the same.
Currently, once an app is installed and verified, users can continue using it even if the SIM card is removed. But this will not be possible anymore.
Cybercriminals often use social media platforms to trick people and steal money from their bank accounts. With this new rule, such crimes are expected to reduce because users’ identities will be properly verified.
The government believes these new rules will make digital communication safer. By making SIM cards mandatory, social media apps will become more secure, and cybercrimes can be better controlled.
