Many apps track your location without your knowledge. This poses a serious privacy risk. You can easily discover these apps. Both Android and iOS phones have built-in controls. These tools let you manage your location settings. Protect your personal data starting today.
Open your phone’s main Settings app. Search for “Location” using the search bar. iOS users should go to “Privacy & Security” first. Then select “Location Services” from the menu. This section shows all your location permissions.
You will see a list of all apps. The list shows which apps can access location. It also shows their specific permission level. Check each app’s setting carefully. You might be surprised by what you find.
You will see four primary options. “Allow All the Time” indicates all-day tracking. “Allow While Using the App” is on app use only. The “Ask Every Time” option allows for permission control as location is accessed, in addition to “Don’t Allow,” which does not provide access at all for that app.
Highlight change in settings for any app. If needed, select a stricter setting from the one you currently have selected. For example, change “Always Allow” setting to “While Using App” or the red circle with the line through it for “Don’t Allow.” Either of these setting changes will generate less background tracking potentially, and you will immediately experience improvement in your privacy.
Most apps do not need your exact location. Instead, toggle off the “Precise Location” setting for apps that do not need your specific location. These apps will have generalized access to your area mainly; they will receive your general area. This is an excellent choice for weather apps, news apps and other utilities that provide typical functions based on location. Location is maintained while your privacy is protected.
In addition to needing to use location settings, some apps do not need any permissions accessed. In this situation, you can revoke permission completely by selecting the “Don’t Allow” option. After the complete permission and setting option is selected, the app will no longer track your movements in any capacity. This is the safest option and eliminates tracking by the app entirely.
Some services genuinely need your location. Maps and food delivery apps for example, depend on location services assigned by setting and permission. If you’re looking for a route, the map or delivery service is going to need the exact location for an app to provide accurate functionality.
Revisiting your location permissions every few months is advisable. In that time, there may be a new app that has gained access. Your needs may also change over time. Make this a regular digital hygiene habit.
You have the power to control your data. These simple steps take just minutes. They significantly enhance your digital security. Start managing your app permissions now.
