Many individuals are curious about the meaning of the “i”. Some people assume it is the internet, while others think it is innovation. Steve Jobs gave the answer himself in 1998.
Steve Jobs introduced the first iMac. This was in 1998 and the Internet was new technology for many people. This computer allowed users to get on the Internet with simplicity. Jobs said the “i” meant i’ and the iMac was built for the web.
Steve Jobs mentioned five meanings in total that supported the “i.” The first meaning of the letter “i” stood for Internet. The second meaning was Individual, which represented a personal machine just for you. The third meaning was Instruct, which raised a focus of education and learning. The fourth meaning was Inform which was to provide information for you. The fifth and final meaning was Inspire.
The intended use of the iMac was to be personal in nature. It allowed users to engage with learning new skills, it was informative with knowledge, and it was supposed to inspire creativity and thinking. The Letter “i” became very powerful inmeaning. It exemplifies Apple which is always user-first – that is, the technology should provide means and serve to help people first which in turn served to help a product.
On the heels of popularizing the iMac product, Apple decided to use the ‘i’ in another product. The iPod was born. Then came the iPhone, a transformative product. It was followed by the iPad tablet. The ‘i’ became a worldwide brand.
Apple has moved on to using different names. The Apple Watch does not have an ‘i’ in the name. The Apple TV does not have an ‘i’ in the name either. But the iPhone and iPad have continued to the use of the ‘i’ name. The ‘i’ brand name has kept the core idea, that technology should give people greater abilities to create.
