US former President Donald Trump takes credit for negotiating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, attributing his administration’s efforts in avoiding a possible nuclear war. Trump highlighted that trade talks were an important aspect to push both countries to sign a ceasefire agreement.
Addressing a press conference, Trump said India and Pakistan were in a full-scale military conflict, and his government stepped in to broker a ceasefire. Trump said the situation was rapidly deteriorating and could have led to millions of casualties if not intervened early.
“They were going at it hot and heavy, and it was seemingly not going to stop, We stopped a nuclear conflict. I think it could have been a bad nuclear war, millions of people could have been killed. So I’m very proud of that,” Trump said.
Trade as a Negotiation Tool
Trump disclosed that he employed trade leverage to force both countries towards a ceasefire. He said, “I said, come on, we’re going to do a lot of trade with you guys. Let’s stop it. If you stop it, we’ll do a trade. If you don’t stop it, we’re not going to do any trade.” Trump said that this strategy made both India and Pakistan change their military actions.
India’s Reaction to Trump’s Assertion
Although Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for the ceasefire, India insists that negotiations were bilateral and not brokered by any third party. Indian officials have reaffirmed that the ceasefire deal was agreed in bilateral dialogue between the two countries, without interference.
Trump’s comments have raised questions regarding the level of U.S. engagement in the India-Pakistan ceasefire. Although he credits his administration’s trade policy for the resolution, India still maintains that the deal was a product of bilateral talks. Irrespective of the conflicting narratives, the ceasefire has de-escalated tensions between the two nuclear powers.
