A doctor in Uttar Pradesh lost a large sum of money. Cyber thugs tricked him cleverly using a new method. They pretended to be a patient needing medical advice. This case highlights a growing threat to UPI users.
Dr. Jitendra Kumar Srivastava received a call on September 8. The caller claimed to be a patient. He requested medical advice over the phone. The doctor, from Shahpur, kindly provided a consultation. The fake patient then pretended to be very grateful.
The scammer proposed making a payment. He pushed for a UPI option. Then the scammer requested the doctor to provide his UPI QR code. The doctor sent the QR code through WhatsApp. That one request triggered a financial loss.
The money vanished from the doctor’s account instantly. The Punjab National Bank account lost ₹2,48,687. The criminals used the QR code to initiate the transaction. The doctor soon recognized he had been scammed. He filed a formal police report.
The police filed a case against the unknown persons. The suspects were identified as Premil Kular and S.K. Rawat. Authorities have frozen the bank account that was involved in the transaction. Now they are busy trying to track the transactions down. The investigation is ongoing.
Never share your UPI QR code with anyone. Treat it like your bank account password. Do not accept payment requests from unknown phone numbers. Do not click on links sent to you by someone you do not know. Never share OTPs with anyone that might call you.
Scammers trick you into sharing your QR code. They claim that they are attempting to pay you. In reality, they use your code to take money from you. The QR code can authorize a payment from your account. Always be the one who scans codes for receiving money.
Beware of fake customer care numbers. Do not install apps from unknown links. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone. Verify the identity of anyone asking for money. Use UPI apps only from official app stores.
Cybercrime is constantly evolving. Always be cautious with your financial information. Educate your family and friends about these scams. Report any suspicious activity to the cyber crime cell immediately. Your awareness is your best defense.
