OpenAI is revamping its much-admired AI utility. Along with that, the company has begun testing the group chat feature. The feature allows ChatGPT to be used by up to twenty people simultaneously. You can book vacations with your friends and conduct group brainstorming sessions at the same time. The interaction will no longer be limited to just one person talking to another one.
On November 13th, OpenAI made the announcement. The process is very transparent and the system is very user-friendly. Group members can ask their questions and anyone in the group can come up with the next one. ChatGPT is notified when a need arises and it takes part in the conversation. Users can also call it out. A simple typing of @ChatGPT gives you instant help.
The group chat feature has all standard applications. It allows web browsing inside of it. You can upload images and files too. You can even use voice input. The image generation feature is also available. It uses the GPT-5.1 Auto model.
Smart Model Selection
The AI automatically selects the best model. The AI selects the model based on each user’s plan. The model plans it considers are the Free, Go, Plus, or Pro plans. The user is not required to change settings.
The privacy of the user is very strongly protected by OpenAI. The AI will not reference your previous personal chat history. This means you won’t encounter personal, awkward, or specific responses. It provides all group chat members with privacy protection. Your personal private data is secure.
Starting a Group Chat
Starting as a group chat is easy. First, click on the small plus icon. You can also convert an individual chat into a group chat. The group chat creates a duplicate copy of the chat. Your original individual chat remains unchanged.
Invitations can be sent with a simple URL. New members will choose a display name first. They can also choose an optional username. They can even upload a photo; it’s not needed. This is all very simple and quick.
Current Availability
The group chat feature is available as limited.OpenAI is currently releasing this feature in select countries. The initial rollout includes Japan and New Zealand. South Korea and Taiwan are also receiving access. The company is providing this feature to all subscription levels in these markets.
OpenAI will be very attentive to user feedback. The company, however, following a wider rollout will plan a later date that it aims to compete with collaboration tools. Among the competitors are Slack and Teams, with Google Docs being another one.
The latest AI update leads to more partnering and collaborating. Problems can be solved by groups together. It will be an enabling factor to teamwork and planning. The ongoing experiment will eventually lead to postive outcome and thus it will become a permanent feature. ChatGPT is turning into a collaborator.
