How The Giant Kite Flies

A helium balloon first lifts the large kite. It raises the kite about 300 meters high. The kite then fully opens in the air. It begins pulling traction cables connected to the ground. These cables are attached to a generator. The pulling motion creates electrical power. This system works like a giant airborne power plant.


 

System Components and Design

The ladder-like system has three main parts. It includes an air component for flight. Traction cables connect it to the ground. Ground equipment houses the power generator. The design captures strong winds at high altitudes. The team also tested smaller 1,200-square-meter kites. The test proved stable energy conversion was possible.

High-altitude wind is a powerful renewable resource. It offers faster and more consistent wind speeds. The energy density is also much higher up there. There are two main system types worldwide. Airborne systems use flying turbines on platforms. Ground-gen systems rely on tethered kites. China’s model is a ground-based system.

This technology offers significant benefits. It uses up to 95% less land than normal wind farms. It can reduce steel use by 90 percent. The system could cut power generation costs by 30%. It provides a very efficient and low-cost solution. This makes green energy more accessible.

A single 10-megawatt kite system is very powerful. It can generate about 20 million kilowatt-hours yearly. This output can supply electricity for nearly 10,000 homes. It represents a massive clean energy potential. This technology could power many communities sustainably.
