Now You Can Check on Google If a Photo Is AI-Generated, Learn How to Use It

Google is launching a new feature for its Gemini app. This tool helps users verify image origins instantly. You can check if Google’s AI tools created an image. It also detects if someone edited the picture. This addresses growing concerns about digital content authenticity. Users simply upload an image to the Gemini app. They then receive an immediate verification result.

How The Verification Feature Works

The feature uses Google’s SynthID technology. This is an invisible AI watermarking system. It focuses solely on images for now. Google will soon add video and audio verification. The company also plans to integrate it into Google Search. Support for industry-wide C2PA credentials is coming too.

Using The Tool Is Easy

Simply upload a questionable image to the Gemini app. Then simply ask the AI a question. You can ask a question such as, “Was this created by Google AI?” Gemini will check the image for a watermark from SynthID. It uses reasoning of its own to generate a response. The tool provides users with additional context about online material.

Current Limitations and Future Growth

Currently, the tool only identifies Google’s AI content. The tool detects images produced by SynthID enabled models. The addition of C2PA support would significantly boost its capabilities, as it would identify content produced by other AI tools, like OpenAI’s Sora and different creative software. C2PA is increasingly establishing itself as an industry standard.

Automatic Metadata for New Content

Google’s new high-resolution AI model will help as well. The Nano Banana Pro model will autonomously produce images. These images will incorporate C2PA metadata, providing automatic origin information for new content. Meanwhile, manual verification through Gemini is a solution for today.

A Step Towards Digital Trust

This new feature marks a significant moment. Users will now be able to identify if content was created by AI. Google is tackling misinformation at its root. Over time, the tool will grow alongside wider industry standards.
