Can I-T Department Seize Cash At Home With an 84% Penalty?

Can I-T Department Seize Cash At Home With an 84% Penalty?

The government is tightening income tax rules. These rules target unexplained cash holdings. Authorities can now impose severe financial penalties. This aims to curb unaccounted money in the economy.

Understanding the 84% Penalty

When conducting a search, tax officers have the authority to seize cash. The owner of the cash must be able to provide an explanation regarding the source of the funds. If the cash cannot be explained, a hefty penalty will apply to the cash, which can amount to as high as 84%. The penalties consist of tax, surcharge, cess, and a fine.

Bank Reports of Your Transactions

Banks have an obligation to report large cash withdraws to the proper authorities. Any transaction that results in a cash withdrawal that is equal to or greater than 10 lakhs will generate a report to the government. Furthermore, if the transaction is equal to or greater than 20 lakhs, the bank will deduct TDS from the payment to the customer. This system enables the government to easily detect unusual cash movement activity. The tax department then reviews and investigates these reports.

Strict Regulations on Property Transactions

You should never conduct a cash-based transaction for a property. If you are selling a property and receive cash that is equal to or greater than 20,000, you are at risk of being assessed a 100 percent penalty on the entire amount of cash received. The only safe method to receive payment for a property transaction is through the use of digital payment methods.

Penalties for Accepting Large Cash Payments

Business owners should also be cautious when accepting large cash payments. A business owner who receives cash payments from one client that total over 2 lakhs in a 24-hour period may be subject to a penalty, and the business owner may be subject to a penalty of 100 percent of the total cash received.

Cash Loans Are Forbidden

Cash loans to or from a third party are illegal under the law. If an individual takes or makes a loan in cash, a 100 percent penalty will apply to the cash loan. You should always use a bank for any lending or borrowing of cash.

The Importance of Compliance

Technology within the government is advanced and continues to evolve rapidly. Banks and mobile applications provide the government with significant data regarding their customers. This creates a detailed financial profile for everyone. Unexplained cash transactions are easy to detect now.
