Justice Gavai comes from a family closely connected to India’s social reform movements. His father, R.S. Gavai, was a politician and one of the thousands of Dalits who converted to Buddhism along with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in 1956. His tenure as CJI has been marked by steady leadership and significant judicial contributions.

Upon Justice Gavai’s retirement today, Justice Surya Kant will be sworn in tomorrow as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. Born on February 10, 1962, in a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant advanced through the legal profession, earning respect for his sharp legal understanding and balanced judgments.
Justice Surya Kant became a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, and has since been part of several major and historic rulings. His decisions have often been seen as guiding principles for the country’s judicial system. Starting tomorrow, Justice Surya Kant will serve as the Chief Justice of India until February 9, 2027, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the Supreme Court’s leadership.

Who is Justice Surya Kant?
Justice Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in a village in the Hisar region of Haryana. His background is noteworthy for the lack of a familial legal heritage. Justice Kant attended a local school for his early schooling before graduating from Maharshi Dayanand University with a law degree in 1984. His father was a teacher.
After starting his legal career in the Hisar district court, Justice Kant relocated to Chandigarh to work at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His appointment as Haryana’s youngest advocate general at the age of 38 was a major turning point in his career.
Justice Kant was promoted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court bench in 2004. He continued his education and graduated from Kurukshetra University with a master’s degree in 2011.
Before being named Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2018, he worked for more than 14 years at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. On May 24, 2019, Justice Kant was elevated to the Supreme Court, adding to his vast background in the legal system. He is expected to serve as Chief Justice for roughly fourteen months.
