Indian Rupee and Dollar Value: The Indian rupee slid to a record low of 90.24 against the US dollar on Wednesday, December 3, provoking political reactions with opposition leaders exploiting the currency’s decline to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the economy. The latest dip comes amid ongoing pressure on the currency despite the Reserve Bank of India’s continued intervention in recent weeks.

Opposition Leaders’ Reaction to the Indian Rupee and Dollar Value:

Leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Sagarika Ghose, was among the first to react, drawing a clear parallel with remarks Modi made in 2013 when the rupee hit sixty. For the first time, the rupee surpasses 90 to the dollar. When it reached sixty in 2013, then-Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi made nasty and filthy jokes about then-prime minister Manmohan Singh. Now, as PM, what should we say? Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also shared a former comment ascribed to Modi, adding, “The way the dollar is strengthening, the rupee is weakening, in such a situation India will not be able to sustain in world trade. Our traders would not be able to shoulder this cost, but the administration in Delhi is not giving any answer.” “Today the rupee has crossed 90 due to their grace,” she continued.
