MP Sugata Roy Caught Smoking: On Thursday, December 11, Sugata Roy, an MP for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was observed smoking outside the Makar Dwar on the grounds of Parliament. Union Ministers Giriraj Singh and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat then confronted him.
Roy refused to back down when the Union Ministers addressed him and voiced worries about the House’s dignity and public health. He stated, “MPs cannot smoke inside Parliament, but can smoke outside in open space.” Shekhawat was heard stating, “Aap sarvajanik swasthay ko khatra pahunch rahe hain (you are putting public health in danger),” in a widely shared video.
“Aaj izzat bacha diye aapki, nahi to sab log benaqab ho gaye hote (Today, we saved your dignity, otherwise, everybody would have been exposed.)” Singh said to the TMC MP in a different video.
Roy later reaffirmed his position that MPs are allowed to smoke outside of Parliament in an interview with reporters. “On the House’s property, we are permitted to use electronic cigarettes. The TMC MP stated, “We can smoke outside but not inside the building.”

On the day that Anurag Thakur, an MP for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accused a Trinamool Congress MP of smoking an e-cigarette inside the Lok Sabha, Roy was found smoking. Speaking in the Lower House, Thakur made the accusation.
“Desh bhar mein e-cigarette ban ho chuki hai, kya aapne kar di hai? (The nation has outlawed e-cigarettes; have you permitted this?) Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla was questioned by Thakur. Birla responded that he had not given any such authority. Thakur did not identify the TMC MP, though.
