Lost Funds in Online Fraud? This is how You can Get Back the Stolen Money

Digital payments are growing rapidly, and online fraud cases are rising at the same speed. Cybercriminals often empty bank accounts within seconds. People lose their savings before they even realise something is wrong. In such situations, one thing becomes extremely important: the Golden Hour. The Golden Hour refers to the first 60 minutes after the fraud. If you take action within this hour, you have a higher chance of getting your money back.
If you delay, the money may move through several accounts and disappear permanently.

Step 1: Call Your Bank Immediately

Reach out to your bank without delay, using the phone number provided for contact. Report any fraudulent transactions that have occurred as soon as you can. When you call, your bank will be able to block any illicit withdrawals immediately; they might even put a hold on your money temporarily until they determine what happened. Make sure that you have all of the information about the transaction when you call.

Step 2: Report to National Helpline

In addition to calling your bank, you should also report the fraud to the National Cyber Fraud Helpline. When you dial 1930 from anywhere in India, your complaint will be recorded right away, and the authorities will send your report to a system set up to monitor complaints against cyber fraud. The process of freezing the funds already transferred is critical to stopping this type of fraud as quickly as possible.

Step 3: Use the Cybercrime Portal

If you were unable to report the fraud via phone, you can visit the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal on the internet. You will be able to create a detailed report through this portal, and the nearest cyber crime cell will receive your report immediately; your bank will also be notified of the fraudulent transaction. Do not hesitate to file a report through the portal simply because you are feeling panicked about what has occurred.

How Authorities Help You

The authorities’ response to your report will be coordinated; the banks will begin trying to trace the account information associated with where the money went. They will try to stop any further transfers by freezing the account if it is possible. The cyber police will investigate the digital trail of transfers, and through their combined efforts, they will be able to prevent any future transfers from occurring.

Prevention is Your Best Defense

Be mindful of your actions to prevent becoming a victim of fraud. Being aware of potential scams can help protect you from becoming a victim. Refrain from clicking on any links that appear to be suspicious or are unknown to you. You should never share one-time passwords (OTPs) or personal identification numbers (PINs) with anyone. If you receive a call asking you to update your know your customer (KYC) information on an urgent basis, ignore the call. Do not download apps from unverified sources.
