Revanth Reddy’s Ugadi Gift: The Telangana government will launch a rice distribution scheme for the poor today as a gift for Ugadi. Beneficiaries with ration cards in the state will be given 6 kg of rice each.
Good news for the people of Telangana. Today, the state-wide Sanna Biyyam distribution scheme will be launched as a gift for Ugadi. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will formally launch this scheme in Huzurnagar in Suryapet district. All the major parties have been saying for many years that the poor in the state will be given Sanna Biyyam instead of Doddu rice on ration cards. This is also one of the promises made by the Congress in the last assembly elections. After the Congress government came to power, it bought 24 lakh tonnes of Sanna Biyyam from farmers in the last Kharif season by giving a bonus of Rs. 500 per quintal. They will be milled and the resulting rice will be distributed to the ration beneficiaries from April 1.
Each ration card holder will be given six kg of rice. As many people as there are in the family, each person will receive 6 kg of rice. Including the new ration cards issued in January, there are now 91.19 lakh ration cards in the state. About 2.82 crore people will benefit from these. The details of those who have applied for new ration cards are also being examined. Once that process is completed, the total number of ration cards will cross one crore. The number of beneficiaries will reach 3.10 crore. 1.80 lakh tonnes of rice will be supplied to all of them per month.
The government will incur an additional burden of Rs 2,800 crore every year by distributing uncooked rice to the poor. To satisfy the hunger of the poor, the central and state governments together spend Rs 10,665 crore every year on distributing uncooked rice. That is, up to Rs 40 is being spent on one kilo of rice. Only a few people are eating this rice. Middle-class people are selling it on the black market for Rs 8-10 per kilo. The same rice is being polished again and sent to hotels, tiffin centers, and shops. Some traders are collecting rice in villages and exporting it to other states and countries. Due to this, thousands of crores of rupees are going into the pockets of middlemen and illegal traders. Now, these irregularities will be stopped.
Currently, a poor family of four gets 24 kg of doddu rice per month, with each person getting six kg. They sell it at Rs. 10 per kg and buy 25 kg of fine rice for Rs. 50. If they get Rs. 240 for the rice sold, they have to spend Rs. 1,250 for the rice they buy. This means that the family has to spend an additional Rs. 1,010 per month and Rs. 12,120 per year. Each person is burdened with Rs. 2,880 per year. Officials estimate that about 80 percent of the ration beneficiaries in the state are selling doddu rice and buying fine rice. For this, they are reducing other needs and household expenses. That problem will no longer exist. The government will save money by distributing fine rice.
