GVMC Politics: The Visakhapatnam political battle has come to a boil with parties going tooth and nail to secure the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) mayorship. While the YSR Congress Party (YCP) is going all out to retain power and the TDP-BJP-Jana Sena combine is eager to wrest it from them, camp politics has become the center of attraction with the same old dramatic turns.
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has officially decided to table a no-confidence motion against GVMC Mayor Venkata Kumari on April 19. Letters have been written to the district collector and corporators, revealing the party’s intention to raise questions on the leadership of the mayor. With the deadline approaching, the TDP has gone to the extent of sending 26 corporators to Malaysia so that they are not able to change sides. The corporators will remain abroad until April 18, ensuring their loyalty when they need it the most.
With this, the YCP has also come up with its strategy to safeguard its interests. The party had relocated 27 of its corporators to Bengaluru last week, where they met party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy. Former minister Botsa Satyanarayana is spearheading the YCP camp politics to address the corporators’ issue as well as bring them into the fold. YCP corporators are to be taken out of the country, and Sri Lanka is the likely destination.

Logistical issues, including four corporators’ passport issues, are complicated things. The Numbers Game The GVMC council has 111 corporators and ex-officio members. The TDP alliance has a strength of 70 and is awaiting the vote of CPI corporator Stalin and Avanti, the daughter of the former Bhimili MLA. The alliance has 74 votes and can easily defeat the no-confidence motion against the mayor. The YCP has 33 corporators and three ex-officio members, some of whom are said to be in contact with the opposition alliance.
As politics within the camp is heating up, both camps are going all out to win. The victor of this bitter war will not only determine the leadership of GVMC but the political destiny of Visakhapatnam in the days to come. The city is eagerly waiting for the drama to unfold.
