Hydra demolishes illegal constructions worth Rs 4,000 crore in Hyderabad

Hydra demolishes illegal constructions: Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (Hydra) launched a massive demolition drive on Saturday. Targeting illegal buildings estimated to cost ₹4,000 crore. These buildings are said to be constructed on 39 acres of land in dispute in two prime locations of Hyderabad, Hafeezpet and Raidurg.

Disputed land and encroachment

The controversial properties were found in Survey No. 79 of Hafeezpet and were reportedly owned by a development group associated with a political figure from the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh. In spite of the repeated court battles for the land, various constructions such as residential and commercial establishments were undertaken. The land was recognised as government land, and encroachment had been a problematic matter for many years.

Hydra’s intervention

The move by Hydra came after a protest by a youth who alleged to have been excluded from entering the area to engage in cricket-playing. On an investigation, the land was found to have been encroached upon. And there were overt efforts to put up demarcations of parcels and buildings. Hydra acted instantaneously and ordered the demolition in an effort to recover government property.

Legal and political implications

The demolition campaign has highlighted the broader problem of illegal land encroachment in Hyderabad. The fact that a political leader’s development group was involved has added a dimension of complexity to the issue, with questions about accountability and governance. Hydra’s firm action emphasises the need to safeguard public property and enforce the rule of law.
