Why Fadnavis want No Credit Scores for Farmers?: Explained

No Credit Scores for Farmers: In the recent meeting chaired by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, he approved the loan disbursement of 44.76 lakh crores for the financial year 2025-26. So, as the meeting carried on to the loans for the farmers, he saw a loophole regarding the credit scores. As in the urban concept, the borrowers are either salaried or self-employed, but when it comes to farmers, it is a little bit tougher to apply for a loan.

During this meeting Chief Minister clarified to all the banks not to ask about the credit score. He was also seen threatening banks that if they ask about the credit score, there might be strict action.

Why No Credit Scores for Farmers:

He also mentioned that the state administration warned last year that banks that kept requesting credit scores before granting agriculture loans would face formal complaints. “Even the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stated that crop loans do not require a CIBIL score.

Major’s reasons for not having a credit history:
I. Local moneylenders and even family members are the usual sources of loans for farmers. Furthermore, for apparent reasons, none of these individuals file reports with credit bureaus.

II. Digital payments and government programs like the Jan Dhan Yojana are very recent. As a result, many farmers are becoming part of the official banking system, although credit records take years to develop.

III. It’s possible that many farmers are still ignorant of how credit ratings are calculated and how to raise them. Thus, they do not fall inside the official borrowing purview.

IV. Because of their sense of risk, banks are reluctant to lend to small and marginal farmers, which limits their ability to establish credit.
