Muhammad Sinwar, Hamas Gaza Chief, Killed by Israeli Army

Muhammad Sinwar: On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel’s army had assassinated Muhammad Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza. According to reports, Israel had launched a major airstrike on May 14 that severely wounded the Hamas chief. However, at the time, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) could not confirm whether the top militant had been killed in the strike.

Who is Muhammad Sinwar?

Israeli troops killed Yahya Sinwar, the former leader of Hamas, during a battle in October 2024. Yahya was the brother of Muhammad Sinwar. He had masterminded the deadly terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. Earlier, after Israeli forces assassinated his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, in Iran, Hamas appointed Yahya as its general head.

Yahya Sinwar’s Death:

Following Yahya’s death, Hamas promoted Muhammad Sinwar to the top leadership position. Then, on May 14, Israel’s defense forces launched a precision drone strike on an underground bunker used by Hamas as a command center, specifically targeting Sinwar, one of the last remaining top Hamas commanders in Gaza. The command center, located in Khan Younis, was hidden beneath the European Hospital. Shortly after the strike, the Israeli military released a video showing a tunnel running beneath the hospital that led directly to the Hamas base.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s Response:

In the official announcement, Israel’s PM said, “In the last two days, we have been in a dramatic turn towards a complete defeat of Hamas. We eliminated Muhammad Sinwar.” Adding to it, he also mentioned, “We had eliminated Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar, and now Muhammad Sinwar.”

After Effects for this war:
Throughout the conflict, Israel has systematically targeted and destroyed Hamas’s leadership, as demonstrated by the deaths of key figures such as Yahya Sinwar, Muhammad Deif, the organization’s military wing leader, Ismail Haniyeh, the group’s political leader, and Sinwar, the most recent Gaza chairman, among many others. Furthermore, Israel has declared its intent to ensure the release of hostages currently held in Gaza and to dismantle Hamas’s military and political power.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led terrorists swept out of Gaza, stormed villages in southern Israel, and killed nearly 1,200 people, mostly civilians. They also captured over 250 individuals and took them into Gaza as hostages.

In the aftermath, following the death of his older brother Yahya, killed by Israeli forces during the ongoing war in Gaza, Muhammad Sinwar rose to the top ranks of the Palestinian militant organization. However, Hamas has not yet confirmed Sinwar’s death.
