Inside the 35-Minute Call Between Modi and Trump

Inside the 35-Minute Call Between Modi and Trump

Modi and Trump: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump late Tuesday and emphasized that India has never requested, and will never accept, third-party mediation on the issue of Pakistan’s illegal occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the topic surfaced after President Trump asked Modi for details about Operation Sindoor. Misri briefed the media on the conversation Wednesday morning, offering key insights into the 35-minute call. Notably, the leaders held this discussion while Prime Minister Modi was attending the G7 Summit in Canada, adding diplomatic weight to the exchange.

Operation Sindoor:

India launched Operation Sindoor as a swift and successful military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. During a phone call, Prime Minister Modi informed Mr. Trump that India’s retaliation remained “measured,” targeting only terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Following this, the Prime Minister firmly reiterated India’s long-standing position against third-party mediation. He stated clearly, “India has never accepted mediation, and it does not and will never accept it.” Furthermore, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told reporters that Indian political leadership remains completely united on this issue. He added that “on this, Indian politics is completely in agreement,” underscoring bipartisan support for the government’s stance.

“India Has Never Accepted Mediation”:

Mr. Trump’s forceful remarks followed his offer to “mediate” on the Kashmir issue and his repeated claims of taking credit for the Op Sindoor truce, claims India has strongly rejected. Furthermore, his comments echoed Prime Minister Modi’s firm stance during his May 12 national address after the ceasefire. Modi declared, “There can be no talks over Jammu and Kashmir, except to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in the region and return India’s space.” He emphasized, “If we ever talk to Pakistan, it will be on terror and PoK only.”

Significantly, Tuesday’s phone conversation between Modi and Trump confirmed that Trump would meet General Syed Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army Chief, who is currently in the United States. According to the President’s daily schedule, Trump will host the Pakistani military leader for lunch in the White House Cabinet Room at 1 PM Eastern Time (10:30 PM IST).

Meanwhile, the geopolitical context adds urgency to this engagement. As Iran and Israel inch toward a full-blown conflict, one that could spill into Pakistan, which borders Iran, the United States may find itself compelled to deploy forces to protect its regional ally. Given this scenario, Washington sees Pakistan as a strategic partner. On paper, the visit appears “mainly bilateral,” focused on strengthening military and strategic cooperation with the U.S. Notably, this marks General Munir’s first visit since the Pahalgam incident, widely believed to be orchestrated by Pakistan’s deep state.

No Trade Deal Angle:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarified that Pakistan had requested the ceasefire and that Delhi and Islamabad had negotiated the terms through existing military communication channels. He addressed Mr. Trump’s repeated claims of credit for the truce, making it clear that the resolution emerged from direct military dialogue between the two nations. Furthermore, the Prime Minister dismissed suggestions that the ceasefire resulted from the threat of higher tariffs on Indian and Pakistani exports to the US. He emphasized that the India-US trade agreement had played no role in influencing this development.

Trump’s US Visit Invitation:
After his G7 visit, Mr. Trump lauded India’s efforts and invited Mr. Modi to the United States, according to Foreign Secretary Misri. However, the PM had to turn down the offer because of previous commitments. It was confirmed that the phone call was made in place of a face-to-face encounter during the G7 Summit. However, this meeting was unable to happen because Mr. Trump had left early. According to the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Trump requested the phone call.
