But local law enforcement took a surprising turn in their response. Instead of arresting the accused, they summoned Atefeh for interrogation. Authorities accused her of violating personal conduct laws based on the nation’s interpretation of the legislation. They reportedly took her into custody and brought her to trial. During the trial, Atefeh tried to present her version of events and defend herself. Reports state that she made a direct appeal in court, and her actions were interpreted as defiance. According to media outlets, one such act involved removing her headscarf while addressing the judge, an act the court viewed as a breach of etiquette.

Death Sentence:
The presiding judge cited her actions and courtroom behavior, ruled against her, and sentenced her to death. Although her birth certificate later confirmed she was 16, official records initially listed her age as 22. Authorities carried out Atefeh’s public execution in Neka on August 15, 2004. After the execution, the case drew international attention. Several organizations, media outlets, and human rights groups raised concerns about her age and questioned the due process followed during the investigation and prosecution.
