DU Admission Form Controversy: ‘Muslim’ Listed as Language

DU Admission Form Controversy: ‘Muslim’ Listed as Language

Delhi University has sparked national outrage with its latest undergraduate admission form. The university listed ‘Muslim’ as a mother tongue, completely ignoring Urdu, an officially recognized language. The blunder set social media on fire and raised serious questions about bias, ignorance, and institutional accountability.

Internet Erupts Over Language Blunder

Users quickly flagged the issue online. The idea that ‘Muslim’ is a religion and could be considered a language shocked many. Urdu, spoken by millions and recognized under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, was nowhere on the list.

Castes and Jobs in Place of Languages

The form didn’t stop at just mislabeling a religion. It went on to list terms like ‘Chamar,’ ‘Mazdoor,’ ‘Dehati,’ ‘Bihari,’ and ‘Mochi’ as languages. These are castes and occupations and not dialects or linguistic groups.

Experts Slam DU’s Language Ignorance

Abha Dev Habib of the Democratic Teachers’ Front called the form “Islamophobic.” She reminded the public that Muslims, like others, speak regional languages, not something called “Muslim.”

Dr. Mithuraaj Dhusiya from DU’s executive council called it “sad” and urged correction. Rudrashish Chakraborty of Kirori Mal College went further. He called it a “brazen attempt” to isolate India’s largest minority and “poison young minds.”

Constitutional Values at Stake

Chakraborty stated that the form mocked India’s Constitution. It violated principles of diversity, multilingualism, and inclusion that a Central University should uphold.

Quiet Fix, No Accountability

After backlash, DU briefly took the portal down. It silently corrected the form but issued no public apology or clarification. Many say that the mistake may be gone, but the damage and mistrust remains.

A Lesson in Respect and Responsibility

Netizens are still debating that the DU admission form controversy exposed deeper issues within academic institutions. Universities must do better. Students and teachers deserve accuracy, respect, and inclusion not errors that insult their identity.
