Zohran Mamdani: In a highly watched ranked-choice primary, Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday night to win the Democratic candidacy and the New York City mayoralty.
89% of precincts reported an hour after the polls closed on Tuesday at 9 p.m. (local time), and 44% of them said Mamdani was their first pick, followed by Cuomo (36%), and city comptroller Brad Lander (11%). Tuesday night, after the first round of ranked-choice primary ballots, Andrew Cuomo gave in to him.
Zohran Mamdani’s Early Life:
He was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian-origin parents Mahmood Mamdani, an academician of Indian descent from Uganda, and Mira Nair, a celebrated Indian-American filmmaker known for films including “Salaam Bombay!” and “Monsoon Wedding.”
He attended St George’s Grammar School in Cape Town throughout his early years before relocating to New York when he was seven years old. Following his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science and Bank Street School of Children, he went on to acquire a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College in 2014.

Mamdani co-founded Students for Justice in Palestine while he was a college student. He coordinated Tiffany Caban’s Queens District Attorney campaign. He also supervised Ross Barkan’s State Senate campaign and volunteered for Khader El-Yateem’s 2017 City Council bid. Earlier this year, Syrian artist Rama Duwaji married Shia Muslim Mamdani. The Washington Post and The New Yorker have both featured Duwaji’s illustrations. Mamdani was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2019. He represents the 36th District, which includes Long Island City and Astoria. To prepare for his citywide race, he focused on housing, affordable transit, and immigrant rights during his term. Mamdani’s political identity attracted a large base of younger, left-leaning voters. It also placed him in opposition to Andrew Cuomo’s moderate support base.
