Bihar Elections 2025: 17 New Reforms for Fair Voting

Bihar Elections 2025: The Indian Election Commission will release the timetable for the 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly elections today at 4 PM. The countdown to the polls has begun. Voters will elect representatives for all 243 assembly seats before the current Assembly’s term ends on November 22, 2025. Two seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs), and 38 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs). The opposition Mahagathbandhan, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress, plans to challenge the ruling JD(U)-BJP alliance strongly.

The recently concluded Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise has sparked major controversy ahead of the 2025 Bihar elections. The Election Commission launched this drive to remove illegal and outdated names from the state’s voter list. However, the opposition accused the poll body of manipulating the process to favor the ruling NDA. It also questioned the timing of the exercise. As a result, the issue has become a key flashpoint in the run-up to the elections.

Bihar Voter List Clean Up:

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the SIR “purified” Bihar’s voter list for the first time in 22 years. He said the update corrected long-standing errors. It also removed duplicate entries from the electoral roll. The Election Commission declared the updated list legally valid. It aims to improve electoral accuracy and transparency.

Bihar’s political parties urged the Election Commission to hold the polls after the Chhath Puja celebration. They believe the move will ensure maximum voter turnout. The Commission is expected to consider this suggestion while finalizing the election dates.

“For the first time, the Election Commission trained booth-level officers. We congratulate Indian voters on completing the SIR process and urge all Bihar voters to celebrate this democratic festival with the same enthusiasm they show for Chhath. Everyone should cast their vote and ensure full participation,” Kumar said on Sunday.

The Election Commission has launched 17 new projects to strengthen the electoral process ahead of the elections. These projects include adding colored photos to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), webcasting from all polling stations, and allowing voters to carry their cell phones in the outer areas of polling booths. Officials believe these initiatives will set a model for future elections across the country.
