Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus remarked that reports of Hindu communities suffering large-scale attacks in the country are emphatically false narratives imposed by India. Yunus laid that in an interview with U.S.-based journalist Mehdi Hasan, fake news is one of the defining traits of India, and a flood of misinformation is washing over the country.
Yunus argued that issues concerning borders and other small disputes have always existed in countries next to each other and these things should not be portrayed as communal issues. He stated that those involved are exaggerated for communal polarization. He added that the government of Bangladesh is on high alert so that misinformation does not affect regional peace.
The Chief Advisor also repudiated a number of international reports proclaiming unbridled communal violence against Hindus after last year’s fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. He said India has been continuing to exert pressure on Bangladesh regarding these issues, for which reason caution and clarity are exercised by his administration in communication.
Despite international condemnation, including a statement of concern from the U.S. President about violence against one of the minorities, Yunus has assured that Bangladesh is committed to the protection of all its citizens, irrespective of any religion.
In November of the previous year, almost 30,000 Hindus marched in Dhaka to protest the violence they faced and to demand that sedition charges against Hindu leaders like monk Chinmoy Krishna Das be dropped. Yunus, discussing these matters, encouraged citizens to consider minorities to be full citizens of Bangladesh first and then consider their respective religions.
Yunus concluded by emphasizing that Bangladesh will always remain a secular and inclusive nation and small communities will get all protection from his government.
