Is Your Phone Real or Fake? Find Out With One Message – Avoid Jail and Rs50 Lakh Fine!

Is Your Phone Real or Fake? Find Out With One Message – Avoid Jail and Rs50 Lakh Fine!

Fake smartphones, cloned IMEI numbers, and tampered devices are becoming a major problem today. Many people buy phones without knowing if they are genuine or modified. This issue increases risks of fraud, theft, and security breaches.

You must check your phone’s authenticity before buying it. The Indian government launched a tool for this. It is called the KYM portal. This tool helps you verify your mobile phone easily.

Use KYM to Check Your Phone

KYM stands for ‘Know Your Mobile’. The Department of Telecommunications developed it. You can check your phone using its IMEI number. This number acts like your phone’s unique identity. The tool reveals if the phone is genuine. It also shows if it is stolen or blacklisted.

How to Check with a Simple SMS

You can do a quick text message check easily. To use this feature, the first step is to find your IMEI number by pressing *#06# on your device. Then, type a text message that reads ‘KYM ‘ and send it to the number 14422. You will get a response almost immediately with information on the make, model, and current status of the device.

Check Online via Sanchar Saathi

You can also check for your phone online. Use the Sanchar Saathi website at www.sancharsaathi.gov.in and click the ‘Know Your Mobile’ link. You will be able to see all the details relating to your phone by entering its 15-digit IMEI number in the input box on the site. Alternatively, you can download the Sanchar Saathi app to use as an extension of the website.

Severe Punishment for Fake Phones

You may be facing severe repercussions for selling counterfeit mobile devices. Altering/adjusting an IMEI number is against the law, and a criminal may be sentenced to three years in prison. In addition to this prison time, a person found guilty may also receive a fine of Rs 50 lakh. Selling counterfeit devices is considered a non-bailable offence.

Why This Check is Important

This information can protect consumers from falling victim to fraudulent transactions. It can help to identify stolen devices, identify “clones” of devices, and assist in tracking down criminal activity involving cybercrimes. Always verify a device’s information before making a purchase.
