The foldable smartphone market is growing fast. A new triple-fold category has now emerged. Xiaomi may soon launch its own model. A recent listing hints at its development. The device could be named Mix Tri-Fold. Samsung and Huawei already released similar phones. The listing appeared on a certification website. It showed the model number 2608BPX34C. Xiaomi has not confirmed any details yet. Specifications and design remain unknown currently.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Z TriFold recently. It features a 10.0-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED display. The screen offers a 120Hz refresh rate. It reaches 1600 nits peak brightness. The phone uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. It runs on Android 16 with One UI 8. The rear camera has a 200MP main sensor. A 5600mAh battery supports 45W wired charging. It also enables 15W wireless charging.
Huawei released the Mate XT Ultimate Design last year. Unfolded, it offers a 10.2-inch LTPO OLED screen. The flexible screen folds to 7.9 inches first. A second fold shrinks it to 6.4 inches. It runs EMUI 14.2 out of the box. The newer Mate XTs uses a Kirin 9020 chip. Its 5600mAh battery supports multiple charging methods.
Every year, sales of foldables continue to rise, with 14% growth in shipment volume compared to last quarter. In Q3, foldables accounted for 2.5% of total smartphone shipments, up from 0.5%. Counterpoint Research has reported this data for 2023.
Samsung’s impressive performance in the foldable smartphone segment shows that it is the leader in this space. Last quarter, Samsung held a 64% share of the foldable smartphone market. Consumers have responded positively to the Galaxy Z series. The Z Fold 7 has experienced significant growth in consumer interest since its launch in July 2023. The Z Fold 7 features an 8-inch internal flexible display and a 6.5-inch cover display, in addition to a 200MP rear-facing primary camera.
Huawei has continued to be a close second in foldables, with an increase in total unit sales of foldables per year of approximately 10%. Huawei’s Mate series has received high reviews from consumers. The Mate’s X series is the first foldable triple-fold device. In September, Huawei announced the successor to the Mate X series.
For Vivo, foldable phone shipments increased 67% compared to the same quarter last year, while Motorola experienced significant growth as demand for clamshell-style foldable phones has risen. In Q4, Motorola’s shipments were 16% higher than for the previous quarter.
Xiaomi’s recent performance in the foldable smartphone space was a significant decline in shipments of approximately 54% compared to the same quarter last year. However, the introduction of a new foldable phone that features a triple-fold design may change that. It may help Xiaomi regain market momentum. The global foldable competition is intensifying quickly.
